Doing What, by Whom, for Whom and How?: An Essay on Interests, Modes, Methods and Other Dynamics in “Theology” and/or “Religious Studies”

The essay begins with a methodological exploration of aspects the continuing contested relationship between modes engaging in study religion, which are often described English as “Theology” or “Religious Studies” and more sharply differentiated German language Theologie Religionswissenschaft. By reference to example some conflicts that emerged around formation European Academy Religion, shows how these two can solidify into opposing scholarly camps. While acknowledging economic pragmatics come fore institutional settings, it notes primacy was rooted Christendom social, religious legal inheritance, while emergence Religious Studies Religionswissenschaft represented an Enlightenment aspiration towards freedom from such.
